Automotive sealing rubber strips are widely used in various parts such as car doors, windows, bodies, sunroofs, engine compartments, and trunk (luggage) compartments. They serve the functions of sound insulation, dust prevention, waterproofing, and shock absorption, maintaining and preserving the internal environment of the car. Consequently, they play a crucial protective role for the occupants, electromechanical devices, and accompanying items inside the car. With the development of the automotive industry, the importance of the aesthetic, environmental friendliness, and comfort functions of sealing strips has become increasingly prominent.

The automotive industry abroad has conducted specialized research and development on sealing systems installed in various parts of automobiles (referred to as AUTOMOBILE SEALING SYSTEM), and their importance is increasingly drawing attention.

1. Classified by the name of the installation part (component) of the seal, they include: engine hood seal (HOOD), which can be further divided into front, side, and rear; door frame seal (DOOR SEAL); front and rear windshield seal (WINDOW SCREEN); side window seal (SIDE WINDOW SEALING); sunroof seal (SUNROOF SEALING); primary door seal (PRIMARY DOOR SEAL); glass run channel seal (GLASS RUN CHANNEL); inner and outer side strips (water cut) (WAISTLINE); trunk seal (TRUNK SEAL); anti-noise seal (ANTI-NOISE); anti-dust strip (ANTI-DUST), etc.

2. Classified by sealing characteristics, they can be divided into weather strips (WEATHERSTRIP) and general sealing strips (SEALING). Among them, weather strips feature hollow sponge tubes, providing good temperature and humidity retention. Commonly used weather strips include door frame seals, trunk seals, engine compartment cover strips, etc. Commonly used general sealing strips include front and rear windshield seals, corner window seals, inner and outer side strips, etc.

3. Classified by the composite structure of the rubber material, they can be divided into pure rubber sealing strips - composed of a single rubber type; dual-composite sealing strips - composed of solid rubber and foamed sponge rubber, often containing metal skeleton materials inside the solid rubber in the axial direction; triple-composite sealing strips - composed of two types of solid rubber (one of which is light-colored) and sponge rubber, usually containing metal skeletons and reinforcing fibers inside the solid rubber; and quadruple-composite sealing strips - Shanghai Shenya Seal Co., Ltd. has taken the lead in developing and producing composite sealing strips composed of four types of rubber materials in China, with a thin protective layer of rubber coated on the surface of the sponge rubber (foam tube), thereby further improving the service life of the seals.

4. Classified by material type, they can be divided into rubber sealing strips, plastic sealing strips, and thermoplastic elastomer sealing strips.

5. Classified by surface treatment status, some sealing strips, after additional treatment on their surfaces, can be divided into flocked sealing strips; surface-coated sealing strips; and fabric-decorated sealing strips.

6. Special function classification: Some sealing strips possess electronic intelligent functions, such as anti-pinch sealing strips.

The routine maintenance of sealing strips mainly includes the following steps. When using car detergent, it is necessary to clean the strips. After cleaning, apply a layer of high-permeability protective agent to make it easier to prevent the aging of the sealing strips.

In addition, the gaps between the sealing strips are prone to being filled with dust and sand, which can lead to corrosion. Therefore, it is necessary to use a brush to remove the dust and sand. Rubber sealing strips should be installed around the car doors.

Sealing strips can enhance air tightness, thereby preventing wind and rain from infiltrating the vehicle cabin. If the sealing strips become damaged due to aging, it can lead to rain leakage in the cabin, increasing the wind noise during driving. Furthermore, rain leakage can easily cause corrosion of the vehicle body.

It is not difficult to see that for cars, sealing strips are a very important part that must be regularly maintained and inspected. The first step is to check whether there are any major cracks or breaks in the sealing strips. If the sealing strips are broken or have significant cracks, adhesive can be used for repair.

Especially when using the adhesive specifically designed for sealing strips, it becomes easier to mend large cracks. Of course, if the sealing strip is severely damaged or has undergone significant aging, it is best to replace it with a new one for convenience. The replacement method of the sealing strip is not difficult, but for better results, it is best to seek the assistance of a professional.
